Me & My Family
I have been a Registered, Licensed Dietitian for about 15 years and one thing has remained constant ..... I LOVE FOOD! I have a passion for cooking and tasting good food. I am here to tell you that it is possible to love food and to be at a healthy weight! I am a Dietitian because I like to share my insights on food, nutrition and cooking and to help people on their "journey toward Nutrition."
My Nutrition journey started at an early age with an interest in how food affected my performance and weight as a swimmer. I majored in Nutrition in college, at The University of North Carolina. I was very personally affected by eating disorders during my college years, as I saw the struggles of many friends and even myself. I did not become a Dietitian immediately after college, but it did not stray far. I dabbled in catering, and found a passion for cooking. After moving to Maryland, I fulfilled the academic course to become a Dietitian, and started working the week after I completed my internship. I soon settled down and started a family with my husband. My personal experiences have exposed me to many conditions that are directly related to nutritional intake, and because of that, I have more recently focused my learning on how nutrition and inflammatory conditions are connected.
I am a talkative person, and I find that I can't possibly reach enough people without the help of social media and the web. I started this site to provide and exchange information, and it is designed for people of all walks of life. Because I am a Registered and Licensed Dietitian, you should feel confident that you are getting reliable information from an expert in the field of Nutrition. Not only am I a Dietitian, but I am also a very skilled cook. I am a Southern girl at heart, which means that I love many traditional Southern foods, however most of the dishes I prepare are heavily influenced from Asian, Mediterranean, Latin and Caribbean cuisines. I think of myself as a "fusion" cook.
Throughout the years I have worked in hospitals, nursing homes, rehab centers, and outpatient clinics. I have worked in catering and I have performed safety inspections in restaurants. I enjoy working with people of all ages and cultures. My favorite thing about being a Dietitian is getting to talk to people and sharing experiences.
I hope to inspire you to try new foods, to cook, to enjoy food, and to be the healthiest version of you! Eating should be an enjoyable experience, and there isn't one meal plan or diet out there that is perfect for everyone. If you don't want to count calories or fat grams, THAT'S OKAY! I personally don't promote severe restriction, because those plans don't work for long term maintenance. Losing weight may be the hardest thing you have ever done, but the return is HUGE on this investment!
The opinions stated on this website are based on education and science, but are not completely without bias toward my personal preferences for certain products, brands, flavors, and types of cuisine. There are no incentives for me to promote certain products. My incentive is that I try to help individuals to make good nutritional decisions and enjoy food. I recommend that no one start a new eating regimen for weight management or disease management without first consulting a doctor AND a registered, licensed Dietitian.
